It’s at this time of year between the old one coming to an end and the new one starting, the lull between Christmas and New Year that I and I suppose many of us look back over the year. It’s not a deliberate sit down and ponder about it it’s more that things come to mind, I started to think about what I’d accomplished art wise and what I’m particularly pleased with. This leat to thinking about the paintings I’ve done this year and what I’d change style wise etc , then which of my paintings was I most pleased with and why . As looked at the photos of the paintings and realised it wasn’t really the ones that others had remark on very favourably but some were ones I had needed to think about more and learned so much from painting them . The list would be long but I narrowed it down quite a lot , it’s these that I’m sharing and asking you to do the same thing , add them to the thread . In no particular order it’s these that I can clearly say yes I’m pleased with how it looks and what I’ve achieved only a few of the ten that I selected.
Come on choose yours and share it .

Most of my best stuff has been sold, and often without recording it, but just to keep the thread going, here’s a couple I quite enjoyed painting.
Paul is doing a sterling job trying to keep the website ticking over, but that relies on members participating - if there isn’t enough interest, I can see Warners having a rethink as to its future, so come on, let’s make an effort… and of course we all welcome any new members that would like to participate!
Here’s a couple that depict my favourite subject… maritime subjects in general… I’ve got hundreds to choose from.

Marjorie, I had the same invalid file problem as you on one of these, but did a screen print of it, cropped it and then it posted OK. Odd why it occasionally does this. I haven’t painted much this year, but these are a few that I have done - and the first two have gone to new homes, so need to get painting again!

Some lovely work on show. I suppose the turn of the year is a good time to look back and consider 'what next'...although you can do that any time, you don't need the new year to do that. To save myself too much frustration, in my case (and maybe some of you), it's more a case of what next CAN I do!
Over the Christmas period I've done very little, but I did have a shot at a medium I used to enjoy very much. Digital art. (OK, it gets a lukewarm reception here, but I really used to enjoy it.) Here's an old digital pic I did. It's my drawings imported into Photoshop Elements, and 'painted' in that app...
My latest attempt was abandoned, my hands aren't up to it. Frustrating! So no more digital art for me.
What I CAN do in my digital app is ASSEMBLE trad drawings into a picture. (It's infant school level in digital art). Here's one made that way a few years ago...
The man, the train, the shed wall, the Southsea poster are all drawn/painted with traditional art materials. In the app they can be moved around, scaled in size, etc. I may do more of this in the coming year. The final image can only be a print, which matters naught to me.
Mostly I'll be drawing with pens and pencils (including coloured pencils). Here's a few done in the past.
Pen and ink and any kind of pencil are my favorite mediums, so no hardship there. Using brushes, especially large brushes is OUT, I get too annoyed with myself. However, after I've spent time girding myself up for the ordeal I will attempt the occasional oil, acrylic, or gouache...although they may never see the light of day.
I'll miss it...here's a gouache I did some time ago...
...that's definitely worth a shot, or two.
No big deal. Just old age taking root.

Excellent work by everyone. Paul I think your slight change in painting style this year has suited you very well and you have produced super work. I have thought about what you have said. I am most pleased with my achievements with regards to working in the style of traditional Chinese brush. It's not something I throw my full attention at yet I enjoy practising it on occasion and admire the ancient style of the work. I have posted an early piece when I was finding my way around working with the difficulties of painting on such delicate rice paper. Of course it takes many years of practice to master and recreate such a style. The later paintings posted are more confident. I've learned to control the medium, be it ink or Watercolours without disintegrating the rice paper. I've learned some old techniques for example, putting a wash on the back of the painting which can prove tricky. It is something I will continue with and hope will improve as the years go by.

My files aren’t uploading, “ problem with file size” which is strange because they’ve all been on the gallery. Fed up trying for the moment.

I don't look back on 2025 with any pleasure; I only sold two pictures all year and then ended up in hospital at the end of November. Next year can only be better! However not wishing to be too negative I did do some work that I'm pleased with.
