I agree worst three again , there is so much talent in a POL gallery that you and could produce better painting unfortunately for any to win they would need better judge . A judge to knows an understands landscape painting would be an asset.
I like watch how people do there paintings , but I do wonder when I look at the initial submissions , why they were chosen in the first place. I try at that stage to guess which of the worst is going through. Still it entertainment not much else to do in lockdowns .

Joining in the conversation a bit late I'm afraid, but I agree with the comments on both the landscape artist and the portrait artist judges. They love them selves too much, and think they are the stars of the show. I believe their should be different judges forLAOTY to PAOTY may be just one judge different, so we can have a slightly different opinion on how todo things.
Changing tact slightly, I have only watched a couple of the Pottery throw down since it moved to channel4, from BBC2. But even though the format of the show hasn't really changed, I must admit I much prefer the BBC format, & presenters. Melanie Sykes, was ok but may be because of social distancing, and new presenter its not for me.

I was on Landscape Artist of the year in the summer of 2018. I really didn't have any conversation with any of the judges throughout the filming of the episode during the four hours of working, before or after. Stephen Mangam was delightful and very funny, Joan Bakewell was kind. I learnt how they make a TV programme, in hindsight I would have worked differently . My painting sold so it was a good days work and I learnt a great deal. I do respect the judges as individuals and it's not an easy task to judge at all. Martin Taylor

Hi Martin, it’s great that you have taken the time to give us some insight into your experience of taking part in LAOTY. I remember your great painting and not surprised that someone snapped it up! I agree that being a judge is a difficult task ( we are all being judges having the conversation!). I Continue to watch it as I love seeing how other artists work! But this year the styles are somewhat diverse!
