I've watched a couple of episodes of this year's series and also haven't been particularly excited by any of the contestants' work. My husband and I have bets on which judge will use the word 'narrative' in a sentence first! I do prefer the Portrait competion - so much more interesting subjects.
This is the first time I’ve watched the series, so can’t compare to previous experiences of the program. I agree with most of what has already been said, especially regarding the wildcard being my choice on each episode. I had high hopes of watching professional artists at their work, observing and learning from them.....a bit disappointing to be honest. As with all this kind of reality ’stuff’, I can’t help feeling that it’s the person, rather than their art that has qualified them for the show. I’ll still keep watching though, I like the one liners and there is the odd gem of ‘proper’ art info.
I’ve also watched this for the first time this year and have not been overly impressed with the work produced (much more interesting stuff from the wildcards) - like Fiona, I tend to think it’s probably the person rather than the art which qualifies them for the show.  Have really enjoyed the PAOTY series, though, even though I’m not really into portraits.
We've always watched this programme but while it has its merit's, we are getting increasingly frustrated with the judges pre-determined ideas. Tai doesn't like anything with figures, birds, swans or whatever, so anyone doing anything like that is immediately ruled out even if they do it brilliantly. They seem mostly interested in finding something new, different or weird. Kate seems to be allergic to anything classical, which for an art historian seems a bit weird. It's got to the point now where we pick the one we like least and pretty much every week that is who wins. I think maybe the judges have become a bit entrenched in their likes and dislikes, it's a bit as if the bake off judges sent home anyone who cooked with chocolate because they didn't liked chocolate. Perhaps time for a freshening up of the judges.
Well said Jane!
In my nativity, I used think it was about technical and artistic ability but now I realise they are only making t.v. programmes.
Anyone watching The Pottery Throwdown, it's a far better program, well worth watching.
Yes Linda, I have been watching it on catch-up for the first time, agree it’s a good watch. Never thrown pots myself  but enjoying it all the same.

Yes Gillian, this is the 3rd series we have watched and I must say these are really good potters this year. I have never thrown pots but its interesting to see the different glazes and firing that goes with the making of the finished items.
Haven’t seen the pottery. I did actually think the landscapers were better last night generally, especially given the overall greenness of the view which a lot of artists aren’t usually happy with. I did think the initial submission of the Nigerian chap was exceptional but not fussed on his work last night. Obviously there’s a big difference having unlimited time to produce your entry submission, and the four hour limit of the programme.  While I agree that a new judge more experienced in landscape painting is a good way to go, I think in this kind of format, be careful what you wish for!  BBC4 is often good for more serious art programmes, though generally not actual painting.
I also like the pottery programme. I watched the latest landscape artist episode and completely disagreed with the judges choices. Plus I thought the winner was one of the worst of the bunch. I thought the Nigerian chap's painting was the best one. But hey, what do I know, I'm just an amateur! The judges (and the other presenter bloke) said 'narrative' at least 15 times in this episode. I was ready to throw the telly out of the window.
May I ask a silly question @ What station are the programmes on ? Sketcher
