Yes Peter, if I tried to copy one of my own pictures I doubt they’d be the same.
I started this thread because I curious about what was involved in making an ai image…not much, it seems. But the thread was a mistake, I was about to delete the thread but people had started to respond. So let’s wrap this up. People have had enough about ai. My mistake.

Not a mistake Lew, a perfectly valid question to ask. The question is simple “is AI art?” My answer is most definitely NO! AI has much to offer the world, for example in the world of medicine, but used to produce pictures whose only purpose is to deceive for someone’s self gratification is not a good use of it. Will it be “Art” in the future when it has learnt by stealing from human creators? That is another question.

My first brush (no pun) with AI art was about 2 years ago. Someone showed me an e-card they had made on their smart-phone. It looked colourful & vibrant, but I could make no sense of it. Then it was explained to me how the author made it. They typed 3 suggestions into AI, I don't remember two of them, but one was 'ancient history'. The bubbly e-card showed a modern cartoon semblance of the Colosseum in Rome. That was AI's reading of ancient history. It took a while for that to sink in. Several days later the full banality of AI came through to me.
If this is AI art it is utterly banal & plays to the gallery of the mindless, I feel.
That's just my opinion.
Apart from that, AI, as modern technology, is environmentally unsustainable, in terms of the energy
& resources it requires to power it, so there is additionally a moral & ecological issue here, I feel.
This is correct, art is not only creativity, it also embraces philosophy, & is reality's mirror.
So what culture is AI art? I don't think it is culture at all, there's nothing cultured about AI, that I can see. I
might even regard it as anti-art.
There have been anti-art movements in the past, such as Dada, however, everything Dada was intentionally
made by human beings.

This may come to a head in short order. My area of NW London seems to be prime for development of big data centres. Every now and then I get momentary power cuts, sometimes with a power spike. They usually come in pairs, like something been switched over and then switched back again. This causes numerous problems, with light timers, security systems etc. Especially as it takes the internet out with it. My guess is that new data centres are joining the system. The power spike last year took out my video recorder hard disc. The irony here, is that the AI the electricity company uses to respond to complaints, doesn't actually understand the problem. Technology is developing too quickly and without any of the fail safe testing that used to be done. Furthermore, we are all becoming so very dependent on it.

In itself, AI is not an art form. Whether it could ever become one may be debatable, but as what it principally lacks is the human hand, its only artistic purpose would lie in using it to adjust pictures onscreen. I don't object to its use particularly, provided we're told the truth about it. Digitally created art is not necessarily AI, which complicates matters.

That’s the point, people, I won’t say artists, trying to pass AI generated images off as their own work - we had a guy recently, in fact there has been several doing just that.
The last one resulted in a few choice comments on the forum which spilled over to the management, it wasn’t something that we want repeated!
Keep AI off this website!

I have a slightly different problem with it. I write books on the history of Melton Mowbray and have done a lot of paintings depicting the town in the past, back to Saxon times. I make them as historically accurate as I possibly can.
The Chairman of our Heritage Society does guided tours around the town and he has begun advertising them using an AI generated poster. It shows Melton castle, but not as it was, a small fortified manor house, but as something on the scale of Warwick or Windsor. Everything about the image is wrong but the danger is that people who don't know are going to believe it.
Another friend has also been dabbling; he has sharpened a couple of old photo's which I suppose is acceptable but he then produced an 1860 photo in pin sharp modern detail showing a footbridge over the canal with a brightly coloured pagoda at the end...which never existed!
These two people are supposed to be historians who care about accuracy and recording the past! Using AI has made it so easy to simply be lazy but once these images are out there you can't put them back in the bottle. In fifty years time who is going to know that pagoda was a figment of AI imagination?
It really worries me and it really infuriates me because I can spend days on a painting and these two produce this crap in five minutes with a few clicks of the mouse.
I do think there is a backlash building though. I sincerely hope so.

The deceit annoys me , just be up front and say I did this with AI in seconds without a lot of effort, it can still be a nice image but not one created from a persons mind . The is a guy ob Pintrest who posts photos of old ships , unfortunately he uses AI to enhance the image and adds people etc that look more like clay figurine , he has ruined some excellent historical photos I realise not literally. Let remember to keep Digital art separate from AI as that does require some work from a person and a degree of artistic skill.
Yes to stopping all AI art on this site , there are sites where it shown but not for me , give me the odd mistakes, not quite drawn well enough or tone not right , the errors we humans make and this makes it unique too.
