I’ve just registered to submit three of my oil paintings in this year’s competition. This is obviously aimed at those of you who are going to enter… I didn’t find the process as easy as it used to be. It’s a completely new form and a couple of pointers for you. Go into the TALP competition and start entries. You need to register (ArtOpps), first with your email address and password. You can’t complete your submissions until this has been completed. The password that you need to use is sent directly to your inbox! You can’t use your own! You can return to your entries up until deadline, providing you don’t click the send button, or something similar! You will be asked to say a few words about your painting, so give that some thought… obviously the size is required but just in centimetres. Once you upload your work there are three other boxes, they’re to send extra supporting images. Had I known this, I would have taken some wip stages, but I’ll know now for next year. I might include a couple of close-up shots this time… Deadline I believe is the 17th of this month, and good luck to everyone involved!

I wasn’t going to enter again this year, but decided I would on the spur of the moment, but began to regret it when I tried to negotiate the new ArtOpps entry form!  On registering, I did eventually manage to set my own password, but even though I completed all the information I could, it was still telling me that my entry was incomplete (mainly because I didn’t have an Instagram or website address to enter).   I emailed the ArtOpps team and they were very helpful, but I found the whole process rather user-unfriendly.  As you say, Alan, it would have been useful to know in advance about the additional information required this year.  Also, unlike previous years, you don’t get a reference confirming which category you have entered, and there’s no submit button, apparently entries that are completed by the deadline automatically get included on that date.

Hmm… that’s interesting Jenny, glad it wasn’t just me! I’ve only downloaded one painting as yet, so I haven’t attempted to check out so to speak, but I’ve not got an Instagram or website either. Why do these companies automatically presume that life can’t exist without these? On the face of it, we won’t be the only ones either.
I'm glad I never submit works to competitions - my temper is short with technological difficulties; and as I'm being treated for high blood pressure of no presently known cause (apart from age) I can do without this sort of aggravation.  But good luck to those who fight their way through the techno-thicket...
Sounds hellish. I was going to enter but don’t think I’ll bother as I don’t have any social media accounts or websites.
My comment wasn’t intended to deter anyone from entering, just some observations that I experienced, more about how to prepare! I don’t think it’s that difficult to fill in the entry form, just a few issues that I had, but easily dealt with after a bit of thought.  You don’t need social media or websites, I haven’t nor has Jenny, so don’t let my comments put you off entering Andrew.

Cheers Alan!
Alan, I would value your advice concerning which category to enter. My instinct is Leisure painter because although I have sold some of my work locally in the last year, I am far from making a living out of it. I just don't want to fall foul of the rules.
Karen, my initial thought would be to enter the LP category! You’re classed as a hobby painter primarily, and not making a living from selling your work. You’ve got a much greater chance of getting a painting accepted, and subsequently an award… but the competition is still tough in this category, but you’ve got to be in it to win it as they say! I was instructed by the previous editor that I can only enter TA category! This is because I’m a regular feature writer for TA, although I’m not a professional artist. Selection in this category is not easy, so I’ll leave you to ponder the decision you need to make… Whichever one it is, good luck!
Thank you very much for your advice Alan; that was what I was hoping you would say. I will now see if I can get back into my account to finish off my entry!! All the best with your entries too. Thanks again.
My experience has been much like Alan's.   Got there in the end but it's take over 45mins and I'm fairly computer literate.  It is unbelievable clunky and not straightforward at all.  Obviously the programme has been written and not tested out on a 'user'!  Anyway, persevere folks!
I’ve forwarded our observations on to an executive at Warners Group. I think it’s important that they are made aware! They may feel that it’s fine, or they may want to review it for next year!
