I wasn't sure what to call this thread , but it’s not the name that matters it’s the content. I realise more and more of late how much I enjoy the different stages of a painting and I’m sure that I’m not the only one. I got great pleasure from watching the painting I’m working on develop from the initial sketch through to the finished painting . Sometimes it’s letting go of a stage I’m particularly pleased with and dither about moving on. It’s not a fear of ruining it , but that could happen to easily it’s more a loss of what I’ve achieve . I tried to explain this to a non painter , they looked at me enough ad to say poor old sods lost it (again). I once read that a painting goes through and ugly stage before it’s finally finished, I sometime think some of mine are uglier at the end.
A couple of examples the basic sketch looks flat and just that bit of colour changes the whole thing.
Then as we move along so it’s develops

Once we add some detail it’s staring to look better and it’s at this stage that I start to really think that it looks ok and have that niggle about moving on , but I know I must. Sorry I’m rambling a bit I know but like a lot of artists I’m still surprised after many years as to what you can achieve with a little bit of paint . Someone please tell me I’m not alone , having quite strong feelings about painting , I can the assure my critics that I’m not loosing the plot , or if I am please be kind as to how you tell me . Signed one aged and rambling wannabe artist. Oh it’s time for my medication so I’m told.

Thank you Bari for your comment. Brian I’ve noticed of late that I’ve developed the habit of dropping in the dark tone , it seems to bring life to the sketch . I have probably put the dark tones in on most of my painting without realising it until recently I am happy with the progress so far. I don’t normal use such dark blacks but it seemed to be the right thing to do.
Still a bit to do . I do like taking photos of the stages and particularly from further back , great for viewing and studying what I have done , often find thing to change or add.
