Sylvia, is that because of your eye problems - in which case, much sympathy to you - or because you're irritated by the programme(s)?
I generally avoid watching painting competitions, and I know I'm denying myself a lot of interesting viewing, but this whole thing leaves a bad taste so far as I'm concerned: Artist of the Year .... well.... I don't know why that annoys me so much, really, but it just does. Caroline or Catherine Tyrrell,** my foolproof memory for names coming to the fore again - she who writes the Making a Mark art blog and is the author of several books - confessed that she'd been reduced to gibbering fury at the judges' decision on the Portrait Artist of the Year programme - in other words, she thought their criteria were a) opaque, b) bonkers. Well, I don't want to be reduced to gibbering fury - there are so many ways to really get annoyed with other people's craziness that I'm not in search of more.
Plus, from choice and to some extent financial necessity, I don't have Sky - I know there's a way to see their stuff without paying for it, but I don't really want to do that either. My money goes on paint, books, cigars, and wine - in more or less that order - the farther I can keep other expenses from my pension and closely guarded savings, the better. But I hope your issue is one of choice, not physical disability - as you know, Beatrice Cloake, once a distinguished member here, is having the same problem: it's a tragedy for anyone, but all the more so for artists.
**Katherine Tyrrell (what do you call a condition where you look up a name on the web, come back to the post you're writing, immediately forget how to spell the name you've found, go back to it, say "oh yes, of course!" - and then forget again? Could that condition be - senility?)

I thought it sounded familiar, gold ochre in oils that is! I’ve never tried it. There’s no sky blue though, it looked identical to Kings blue light on his palette, which I do have a tube of Michael Harding in my collection, a fine blue it is too and very useful…
This particular series is a masterclass Robert, not a competition, but I do share some of your sentiments regarding art competitions on tv in general.
And, if I may say so, one of the best programmes that I’ve seen for some time, something for the relative newcomer to painting and drawing, up to the more experienced, which I put myself in latter group of course!

Adibanji touched on what I suppose you could class as grisaille in the first episode. I’m sure they’ll be repeated, many times!
Glazing is more of a technique of course, and not the easiest or interesting thing to demonstrate in a short programme.
I would have liked to have seen something with buildings and industrial structures, maritime perhaps, but we could go on and on with an endless list of things.
With any luck they might make another series, unlikely as that seems.

Sorry to hear about your condition worsening, Sylvia. It's most unfair.
There are 40 masterclasses in all as announced on the dreaded Facebook. So probably re-continued in the New Year.
What I've noticed so far, is the liquid consistency of oils used by most of the artists, especially in the under paintings. I've learned that the thickness if mine is possibly hampering my efforts. So I'm going to use more thinners/mediums. I didn't think I'd like the Christian Hook class, but I think I will try a few throw away efforts, with loose acrylic underpainting...just to stop the resistance I have. I'm not keen on his drippy final style, but as a lesson I found it priceless.
Robert, SkyArts is on Freeview, which you must have. You just have to find the channel. If you want to, that is.

40 it is then, that’s good news for many of us I’m sure…
They do paint very thinly in the early stages, that is noticeable, something I try and do myself, it prevents having to work the next layers over sticky oil paint!
The clouds guy made a bit of paint go a long way, courtesy of a very large round hog brush… it has given me some food for thought!
This Hook guy has established himself by creating something different, he’s very creative but that his thing… (although it will have been done before), it wouldn’t work for me, I’m too much of a traditional painter, and I’m not into gimmicks - I’m not suggesting he uses gimmicks of course, his style of painting is very exciting and certainly his own!
I’m watching with a SkyQ box, so I’ve recorded several that are of particular interest to me.
