You're making progress in leaps and bounds. As well as charcoal pencils, which I use but do get the stuff smudged and all over the place, you could try (not all at once - over time!) carbon pencils - they don't work on any hint of grease, but are harder and less inclined to smudge than charcoal, and conté crayons - sticks of hard pastel, traditionally available in black, white, sepia, and bistre (a red-brown) but available now in a wide range of colours. If you like charcoal, you'll like those. And did you know you can use water with charcoal - plus actual watercolour, and Indian or Chinese ink? The possibilities are endless, and all without needing to try every new (and expensive) thing on the market.

I didn't know that charcoal was so versatile Robert, it certainly gives me something further to explore. I just use a cheap sketch pad but I would like to get some decent paper to use with charcoal but I'm not quite sure what would be best to get. I will have a look at the carbon pencils and crayons. Thanks.

Denise, your sketching is getting better all the time and charcoal seems like a niche. I really like the woods (and the Easter bunny). Very nice sketch of Venice, Bari, and one of the reasons why it's off my bucket list - the crowds. It keeps me looking around the scene to see what's happening.
I've been very lax with sketching this month and just busy with other things now Autumn is here in the southern hemisphere. I've just finished another painting and, recently, did a simple tonal sketch at a local beach. It has a massive rock outcrop that curtains off a very nice spot for swimming. Looking at seascapes to do a large painting for my daughter's lounge room wall.
