Before this thread disappears I’d like to add this painting by dame Laura Knight of the Nuremberg Trials.
Hopefully it will last until tomorrow at least , this is a superb painting you have picked out Tessa , all those different poses . I think each figure is a painting in itself .
Always when I think of Dame Laura Knight I think of the Newlyn School and Circus people and Gypsies. So this is new to me.not that I an an expert.  But such a lot to look at all beautifully painted ,a look again painting. Thanks Tessa .
Both of them were brilliant with flesh tones and neither of them went down the purple route for the shadows.  I expect they discussed this at great length.  Both of them have used neutral grey on some occasions, but also used greens and browns.  But Laura Knight always makes me think of her war paintings of women, especially as my mum was a welder in the dockyard in WW2.
Linda your choice of artist was due this week , but I will leave it till your back from your holidays, let me known when your back and I will set it up. Have a good time .
Will do.  Meanwhile I will get reading.
Purple shadows - oy vay....   Yes; there was a watercolourist who always, and I mean ALWAYS, used purple to indicate shadow.  I've forgotten her name now; I never commented on her pictures or methods, because how DO you say 'this is just awful' without giving offence?  She taught, too - oh dear.... I wouldn't want to offend her, even now - but purple can certainly work to indicate shadow, when appropriate - eg, shadows on a yellowish cast: but - just not always: please not always.  There is never just one way to achieve any effect - I'd almost rather see the ubiquitous Payne's Grey for shadow than obligatory purple - look for complementaries, real complementaries, rather than a formula for all shadow.   It's almost worth offending someone, to get this point across: try using purple to show shadow on green grass, for example -or rather  DON'T: if you really thought about it, why would you? Sorry for any hint of anger, but I've had this painter in mind to take down for a long time - it gives me no pleasure to rubbish someone else's suggestions, but really: just don't do this.
By the way, the Laura Knight painting of the Nuremberg trials: so many of these instant portraits are very recognizable, apart from one - the defendant with the marcelled white hair - does anyone have any idea who that was supposed to be, or was it an affectation which appealed to Dame Laura?  At my age - and with my interests - I can readily identify Funk, Ribbentrop, Frank, Schacht: but who is Mr Wavy-hair?  I can see Keitel, Jodl, Speer.... can't see Streicher; is the Marcel-wave von Neurath?  Von Papen?  Looking again, I can see Kaltenbrunner, Goering, Hess - but just can't recognize that one....  Does it matter?  No - they were all horrible old devils - but this one has troubled me for over 50years.  Have fellow pedants any idea?
Unfortunately not Robert. I found some fascinating and excellent sketches by Dame Laura of the trials, which are worth a look, but couldn’t find any information re identification of individuals. I can barely imagine what a challenge it would have been to achieve an accurate likeness of such a large and lethal bunch in the circumstances of a trial of that magnitude.
No idea either! What an extraordinarily complex painting to undertake, incredible work!
Does this website solve the mystery of 'wavy man'? http://www.duncanmiller.com/artists/item/298/8069/prisoners_in_dock_at_nuremberg_trial_no_2 Julius Streicher? The face is similar to many photos, though many most show him with no hair. Edit for smelling pistake. Memo to self; put glasses on when reading and typing!

After some more research I found this which suggests not Streicher but Frich. Apparently Laura Knight moved people from where they were actually sitting for some reason- artists license? Is this the same link Colin? I couldn’t open yours.
