At the risk of receiving a missile from North Wales, I think the Queen portrait is rather good and considerably better than many painted by more famous artists. I assume it’s from a photo. I agree that the first landscape is not particularly appealing. His portrait sketches or drawings are impressive. I’m guessing they are all commissions and I imagine he makes a good living from them. Thanks Dixie for the choice and info. I think Russell is right in saying that anyone following Mancini was likely to be considered a few rungs lower on any ladder!
I too like his drawings.  Portraiture is the most difficult genre for my money, his portrait of the Queen is far from the worst I've seen.  Lucian Freud's was awful, nor was I thrilled by Rolf Harris's attempt.  I don't think the Royals comment about the many portraits made of them...perhaps in private, but is anything private for such people these days?  His landscapes aren't to my taste.
No missiles today Tessa each to their own.
Agree with the other comments.  I do like his drawings, not keen on his paintings.

The discussion is going much the way I thought it would, his sketches are seem in a better light than is paintings . I first noticed his portrait work then came across his sketch’s  and it’s the sketch’s that I prefer, lot of skill in drawing them. What I try to do is bring different artists and their work to your attention for you to make what I want of it, I was asked by a friend if I chose artists because I like the work they produce, easy to answer  No . I post artist who I have come across while researching for the thread , what I so is try to not use to many pre Victorian artists , and using  artists from within the last hundred years or so . Some I have posted in the past I don’t particularly like the artwork but it would be wrong for me to open a thread  by being negative and possibly influencing people.  Can I please have more names for the lists of it going to be mostly my choices you have to put up with .
I shall probably get a missile from North Wales as well, 'cause I quite like Peter Prendergast's work. I'm in Powys so not so far to fire it.  😁
I don't think I know Prendergast's work, so will look it up.  One royal did comment on a portrait - the late Duke of Edinburgh, as perhaps you might expect.  An artist whose name I've forgotten painted a rather grotesque portrait of him, with a fly on his shoulder and unclothed upper body - asked if he thought it looked like him, he replied "I bloody hope not!". The Queen tended to be more discreet......  The Rolf Harris painting - well; I don't know why he chose the emerald green dress for her to wear, because it gave him endless problems; at one point he said it looked as if the portrait were sneering at him; but - as I remember it: and it does seem to have disappeared (wonder why....?) I thought it wasn't half bad.  You can't win with royal portraits though - what I thought was a rather good portrait of the late Queen was described by Brian Sewell as reminding him of an anxious pensioner, waiting for a bus.  There are probably more portraits of Queen Elizabeth II than of any other person on earth: few have escaped criticism, few have - I feel - really worked.  Probably, there were far too many - and the Queen was just too famous, too familiar; maybe all except Freud were afraid to take liberties or demand more time with her.......  We all thought we knew what she looked like; the weight of expectation on portraitists was a heavy burden.  There was a pretty good attempt on POL some years ago - one of the very few portraits of her from photographs I've ever seen that actually worked.
Well, I looked at Peter Prendergast's website - I can see the comparison with the first landscape shown above, and maybe, Paul, you might want to feature him in a future mini-exhibition here: but - I can only say I can see why Sylvia has problems with his work, to put it as neutrally as I can.
This was one of several I found, when trawling through the archive.  There are several others: a few near misses, and of course I've immediately forgotten the name of the artist, which I'll try to find.
Sally Hewlett-Taylor - another artist we haven't seen lately.  Do enter 'the Queen' in the Gallery search engine, and take a look at several others, eg one by Edward Ofosu, though there are several good examples which are at least as good as Colin Davidson's portrait.  Sorry for taking this thread for a bit of a walk, but Paul - there are so many great pieces to be found from that Search alone, from artists with whom we've lost touch if you'd like to take another look.
George I understand why you like his paintings.   I did until I went to an exhibition of his in Oriel Mostyn in Llandudno and the sheer volume of them and the black lines I went off him…
