Welcome to this weeks thread , it a bit different to our usual format in that this week it’s about Poster , Recruitment, Advertising, Warning , Political etc . The only thing I ask is that it’s not offence material that’s posted , I’m sure no one will but unfortunately we have to add these requests.  My thought are staring will poster in the late eighteen , nineteen hundreds and as the week progresses bring it up to day , that of  course doesn’t mean that you can post some unusual that you find later in the week . Poster as sadly a thing of the past, we are now treated to online advertising, electronic screens , and of course the emails but none are like the old poster . They were everywhere when I was growing up, on the side of buses , lorries , building , huge billboards etc . I recall my grandmother being horrified in the mid sixties ( she would have been in her late Seventies, as I an now ) when she spotted an advertisement on a bus for Wonder Bra, . You would think it was hardcore porn the way she went on about it . I’ve selected some recruiting posters and some advertising posters, I hope you will have a delve into the internet and find some to add .

The poster.  A fabulous form of art.  Some great examples above Paul.  One of my favourite poster artists is Gino Boccasile.  He worked for a period before and after World War 2.  He covered everything from hot-water bottles to wartime propaganda (against us, of course...he admired Mussolini and joined the fascists).  I love his lush painting style, and how much joy his posters displayed about everyday things like pasta and olive oil.  He was famed for the beautiful Italian women he painted.

Excellent selection Lew , they do look dated Alan .  What I find sad is that lots of people dismiss this type of artwork as if it’s not real art , similar to book illustration. They have to be designed to get a message across at a glance , and need to tell the story quickly, many were seen as fleeting glance as you passed them through bus windows etc .

Yes they are dated, but that’s part of the charm to me.  I also admire modern poster work.  I guess we’re lucky to have so many vintage posters, they are ephemera…designed to do their job and then get thrown away.  So many were just dumped, fortunately some people recognised their worth and saved them.  I never seem to be around when these things happen.

One of the best known ads for Pears Soap, based on an 1886 painting (‘Bubbles’) by Millais and used for many generations to advertise the soap.  During his lifetime it apparently led to a widespread debate about the relationship between art and advertising.

We’re would we be without the safety posters , clean answers only . Looking back at some of the old posters yiu forget how graphic some were , down right blood thirsty .

Those train and road safety ones are quite scary! I found these travel posters for Barry island where we used to go as kids and I took my children there when they were young. Not sure about the exotic version but it made me smile.
