Wellcome to this weeks thread , one of our special week’s featuring a week of woodland scenes chosen by yourselves. The tile is famous artist but please don’t think this means only the  very famous as there are some very talented lesser known artist . I will open the week with four paintings from Peder Mork Monsted who is my all time favourite landscape artist, I know he paints photorealistic but those trees are so good. I have also chosen a painting by Camille Pissarro No5 and Paul Cessane No 6.  Please do find some and upload them to share . Peder Mork Monsted . Camille Pissarro Paul Cezanne.
I’ve chosen two paintings each from two of my favourite landscape artists - Ian Sidaway and Richard Thorn.
In the fauve corner, Derain:
Abstract expressionist, Wolf Kahn. Gorgeous colours.
Frank Johnston, one of the Canadian Group of Seven, “Dark Woods - Interior”
Some wonderful examples shown.  I, on a personal note, mainly see woodland as background to stories...and there have been many fine examples created by illustrators. Alan Lee, a brilliant artist, paints woodland so well.... I find John Bauer's work inspirational, he worked in the early 1900s, dealing with Scandinavian Myths, I love his moody woodland scenes.  His work was a great influence on illustrators.
Some excellent examples posted so far , this is my favourite woodlands painting by any artist but it happens to be by Monsted . Oh to be able to paint ax good as this or even half a good , I get lost in the woodland in my mind just looking into this painting.
Some more from three different artists .  Stanly Vickerman 1884-1974 Tree Roots John Woodward 1936 Winter Trees Madeline Enright Trees
My knee jerk reaction was to look up Sisley, Pissarro, Corot and even check if Edward Hopper ever went down to the woods one day.  Then I thought woodland scenes are a popular topic on POL so I searched the POL gallery instead.  Here are three, from a very limited survey, that struck me as interesting but there are many, many more.  They may not fit the 'famous artists' part of the headline, but they are worth a look.  Perhaps a future topic for this series could be to pick a theme and dive through our POL favourites. I’ve selected a few from Hockney’s ‘A Bigger Picture’ exhibition at the RA, which I had the privilege to attend, multiple canvases fixed together on an unprecedented scale!
Simon Palmer was one of the artists featured on a previous thread who just wowed me. This is called Low Thorpe:
Trees,trees,and more trees….gorgeous.
