Jackie Morris (born 1961 in Birmingham) is a British writer and illustrator. As a child she lived and went to school in Evesham. She attended the Prince Henry's High School in Evesham, and later the Bath Academy of Art. She worked as an illustrator on various magazines including the New Statesman and Country Living. She's written and illustrated over 20 of her own works and illustrated an equally large number of books by other authors. She was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2016, and won it in 2019 for her illustration of the book 'The Lost Words' - voted the most beautiful book of 2019 by UK booksellers. For many years I've stumbled across Jackie's work in bookshops and giftshops in West Wales where she now lives, and have always been captivated by her paintings, whether as book illustrations or as prints. It is only in the last week that I have seen some of her originals which are now on show at the St David's Visitor Centre and Gallery (Oriel Y Parc in Pembrokeshire) as part of the 'Lost Words' exhibition . A more detailed biography can be found here: Jackie Morris Biography and her own web page at: Jackie Morris Homepage You will find multiple examples of her work by conducting a wider search on the internet. Enjoy!
Thank you for the introduction Andy , your choice of paintings and illustrations to open up with is excellent.
Thanks for the reminder, Paul - OF COURSE I'd forgotten, you know me by now.... I think these works by Jackie Morris are a fusion of the naturalistic and the fantastic, and that's normally enough to flick my mental OFF switch: but in this case - no, I'd not seek to do it myself, I'm not that sentimental about foxes, frankly (wouldn't hunt, poison, or shoot them, though, either, for the sake of clarity) - I love 'em.  The heron is just gorgeous (I often wonder how they manage to fly: very occasionally, we get a couple over here, and it's like watching a mattress zooming overhead) but if any bird deserves the title of majestic, it has to be the heron.  A big nuisance if you keep koi carp and goldfish, but surely worth the occasional loss, to see these gorgeous birds (and if it isn't, put netting over your pond).  She has caught the bird perfectly, the sky-pattern of the swallows, and the sinuousness of the otter. The fish going for a walk - well; I admire the painting - I know how she's represented those tail fins, with a fine sable brush - and I don't understand it for the life of me, but there we are.
The few I've shown with gold leaf backgrounds are just stunning to behold.  Here's one more I like:

Love this type of illustrative work.
Wonderful, sensitive and beautifully painted work. I did look at her website over the weekend and will choose something to post later. Some of these above must be book illustrations I imagine. The lady taking a fish for a walk is a particularly striking composition and image. Also the fox nose to nose with a hare- certainly unlikely but makes a superb picture! Great imagination and skills.
A terrific artist.  Slightly stylized and very imaginative.
Although I would be the first to congratulate, and even envy, Jackie Morris regarding the skill, execution and imagination of her work, it doesn't really 'touch' me.  It may be that I am simply getting old and cantankerous but I hope it is something else.  Her work strikes me as technical rather than up lifting.  It is though she is illustrating an idea rather than trying to stir an emotion.  No disrespect is intended, I was just having a moment of introspection, wondering why such capable work does not stir my soul.  I looked out for something on the web to try and challenge my pessimism but found only more animals.  Jennie's example of the two mice having a cup of tea did make me smile, perhaps there is hope for me yet!
Just bringing this thread forward  again.
A few more that I like. She is a very distinctive artist.
Some more of her work that I like...
