Hello and welcome to this weeks featured  artists Ian Sidaway and Jenny Saville. Jenny will introduce Ian and later in the wee I will do the introduction to Jenny Saville. I hope you enjoy the artists and their artwork.  Any mores suggestions for the list please let me know , have a good week .

Ian Sidaway will be well known to readers of The Artist magazine.  He was born in 1951 into a mining and clay working community in Staffordshire and studied graphic design at Twickenham College of Technology.  After a brief spell as a designer in advertising he began to concentrate on painting in the 1970s, also working as a carpenter, builder and gardner to earn a living. In the 1980s he focused on commissioned portraits and in the 1990s changed direction with book illustration, later authoring his own books (over 30 titles).  In 2008 he decided to concentrate on producing works to exhibit.   He works in a range of different materials, but mainly watercolour, with paint being applied using a variety of tools.  His current subject matter is mainly landscapes. One of my favourite artists, I love the clean lines and graphic quality of his work.

I’m certainly familiar with his work as a contributor to TA magazine. Yes, excellent graphic qualities showing through, a fine artist!

I've admired Ian Sidaway's work - and bought his books! - for many years: and he's just a year younger than I am, so of course I've got to support him.  I think we should see much more of his work - not just the works he contributes to very many text-books, all of which are, of course, excellent, but the work he does for himself - he is, and has always been, a munificently gifted artist (mind you, his own sheer hard work contributed much more to that than any inherited talent) - he has helped so many of us through his instructional books, and deserves a place in the pantheon of great British artists.

I agree. He produces consistently clean precise work instantly recognisable as his own style, and I always enjoy his articles in The Artist. I didn’t realise he had focused on portraits for a while and will be interested to see if I can track some of those down.

I haven’t succeeded in finding any portraits but here are a few more landscapes that I found. I like his use of foreground detail in his composition, so that you look through and past something to the distance.

He's got a cauliflower in the tor painting!  Happens to the best of us....
