OHARA KOSON (1877 - 1945) was a prominent Japanese woodblock artist known for his contribution to the Shin-hanga (‘New Prints’) movement.  Under the influence of ukiyo-e master Hiroshige, he excelled in creating exquisite prints of birds and flowers, combining traditional Japanese themes with contemporary flair.   His detailed and realistic renderings, marked by their vibrant colours and intricate designs, were highly sought after in both Japan and the West. His work played a significant role in preserving and re-invigorating the woodblock print tradition in the early 20th century.
Thank you for the introduction Jenny , the detailing is so good it must have taken hours to get the complete. I will have a good look online and see what else I can find .
Marvelous work.  My sketchy ideas on what woodblock 'is' and how the various colours are applied is flummoxed by this work, I've no idea how he gets the colour gradients with this method.   I'll have to look it up.  I'm a bit busy at the moment.  Painting.  My bathroom... with emulsion paint.   Another brilliant find Jenny.
Incredible work indeed, and such a difficult skill to master. I am familiar with the process, and I can tell you that this wood block cutting and printing process is verging on exceptional!
Some that I particularly like, I still can’t believe the detailing he achieved. My favourite one .
Wonderful work indeed, not just for the skill of the artist, but the beauty And sensitivity of his designs. Exquisite!
I love his work, especially the birds which are true to life but exquisitely artistic.
Tessa has said it all, sensitivity and beautiful art.
Extraordinary prints. I was totally unaware of this artist. There is much to be learned from this group of images...
I will be late posting my selected artist today , I’ve also corrected the name it was incorrect it’s John McCartin .
A sense of harmony and beauty in his work. Exceptional work from a talent Jenny.
