Whatever your medium, you don’t need loads of different colours, or stacks of brushes, but you do need to buy quality brands in both.
If you don’t, and I refer particularly to brushes, you won’t make any progress with your art! Regarding paint, half a dozen colours is adequate to get started with - It’s so important to learn to mix.
