Typography, A type of Art?

Typography, A type of Art?

Good typography is about visualising language through the arrangement composition and choice of type. Typography, Its everywhere! Just look around you, bold headlines in newspapers, eye catching packaging, slogans you wish you could forget but you just can't! Typography is also a huge part in the magazine, to draw you in and make you want to read the articles! I've been looking back at various issues from 1982 and some of the typography in the adverts is wonderful! I personally love retro style, being that it's very bold and has that 80s style (well of course it would it was produced in the 80s!) I love comparing old magazines to the most recent issues, there's just something about seeing a magazine develop and grow because of the way the times have changed and the different era's and style. This can be seen throughout the magazine and in the typography aspect of it more specifically. Personally I think that there is something wonderful about having bold and perfect text that catches your eye and really makes you think about what the title or heading is saying and what kind of emotion it is trying to provoke from you. It's crazy to think that some styles of type and advertisement have come to an almost full circle! Things that were in style 30 years ago are now coming back into style in the design and fashion world. So I encourage you to look around and try to find things that wouldn't be the same if they were done in a different type face or style and if their slogans weren't as catchy or striking would you still remember it? Maybe try your hand at producing some different fonts or headlines in a style that you love and see how playing around with different styles can affect the collective piece of work or article. Millie
