At number 7 in our top ten Leisure Painter designer, Alison Tumer, told us that the reason for her 2 favourite paintings is not so much the paintings themselves as the meaning behind them. Her first, The Fall of Icarus by Brueghel, shows the tragedy of Icarus plunging to his death as a very small part of the picture. The lives of others form the main part of the picture, and they carry on heedless of the terrible event occurring so close to them. Alison finds this poignant in that tragedies, great and small, occur in life and have a great affect on those closest to the situation but for those not involved, life goes on without a moment’s hesitation. Her second choice The Babylonian Marriage Market by Edwin Long shows the Victorian ideals of beauty imposed on a situation which occurred in a very different culture to Victorian Britain and, whilst these have changed tremendously over the years, we still have modern standards of what beauty is thrust upon in everyday life. We have added a video from youtube showing some of the paintings of Brueghel.
