Memory & Imagination in Painting

The artist's memory is a wonderful thing and even though sketchbooks are handy for colour logging and mapping out shapes, the memory is the important thing - that feeling of the moment. I recently noticed that a painting of mine The Blue Pool has come from a memory of Durness Golf Course up in the North West of Scotland. I had no idea where the painting came from and simply thought it was my imagination, but then my husband showed me a photo of the golf course from our holiday and I realised it had entered the painting. No copying off a photograph. No sketching even on this one! So the painting ends up a sort of atmospheric, dreamy piece coming from the artist's imagination.
