Twelve months ago I was approached by the Reverend Philip Chew regarding a commission for the church of St Saerans, Llanynys, North Wales. I was asked if I could reproduce the image of a 15 Century wall painting of St Christopher and the Christ Child onto a large canvas. I accepted the commission and set about researching the painting and the history of the church. The original painting is around 15’ x 9’ and what remains is an outline under painting with most of the detail missing, although specialist restorers have been able to provide a basic colour palette and the medium used in the original. St Christopher and the Christ Child of St Saerans is of historical and National importance and is overseen by the Royal Commission On The Ancient And Historical Monuments Of Wales Coflein After taking countless photographs and measurements of the original I decided to make a preparatory oil sketch of the work, I produced several sketches and a painting in oil on paper to get a feel for the subject. On the 14th of July 2013 I took part in the pilgrimage from St Saerans and presented the oil sketch to the church and Rev Chew. I also had a chance to meet and photograph the congregation of the church and discuss the painting and it’s significance with them. After twelve long months my custom made canvas is due for delivery and I will be starting the commission of a lifetime.
