Learn Painting In An Hour?

If you take Leisure Painter you might have spotted my page on 'Learn Painting In An Hour', and wondered if that's possible or what it's all about. The series is about the key principles (rules if you will) of painting, each tied to a straightforward exercise which will help you to get the principle under your belt. I reckon you can do these exercises in an hour or so - hence the title. This doesn't mean the exercises are simplistic, the first technique 'Imprimatura' is staggeringly important and relevant to both traditional and contemporary painting. In fact the more I use imprimaturas in my own work and research for the School, the more I realise how fundamental they are; for example one cannot copy most of the work of Turner, Monet or Rembrandt without using the technique. I'm not doing myself out of a job by the way, while a magazine article is useful it can't actually show you how to hold a brush or check the consistency of your paint. It might get you thinking new ideas or put on the right track though which is the main thing. So I think theres room and purpose in both the articles and the School here in Norfolk. Anyway to get back to the point of this post- can one really learn painting in an hour? I think the answer to that lies in reversing the question - can one learn painting in a lifetime? I think the answer to that is yes and no. No if you try and learn everything at once , but yes if you take it a little bit at a time; an hour or so each day of focused study should do..
