One of my favourite features in the Art Mag is the Studio survet -always interested in how other artists organise themseves -where they paint even if its just in the spare room. I myself paint mostly in oils so its not really an option to paint inside the house .My wife who models for me regularly is very supportive but I dont like the idea of solvents inside the house. Two years ago I had a concrete garage built at the back of the house -it was purpose built,no up and over door -just a steel normal type house door plus one good sized double glazed window .I intalled a proper power supply with its own external trip guarded box and bought a mobile gas heater for the winter. I use it only for my painting and refuse to let it become the "pverflow " storage space that a shed normally becomes. It works quite well really -sometimes I sit out there with my dog listening to Duffy and simply read a book (usually when the TV is pouring out trivia like Coronation Street ,Casualty ,Emmerdale ,Eastenders -you know all that stuff that seems to shorten your life span -cant watch any of it -I,m 57 years old and got too much to do to waste time like that .My daughter calls me a "Sheddai" :o) You know the Mahl stick used to allow you to paint in the middle of a wet painting without actually touching it -well I developed my own idea to do the same thing -My main easel is simply a huge "A" frame with a flat top rather than a point .it leans against the wall -across the top is a piece of 3inch by 2 inch piece of wood -I hang a long piece of wood 4 inch by half inch from this so when I neeed to get up close and personal I move it along and can comfortably lean on this without touching any part of the painting Anyway how about you guys - where do you do your thing
