GROUP CRITIQUE

After lunch we had a group critique on the mornings paintings as usual, and whilst this is a bit squirmy making, we agreed that we learn as much from each other, as we do from the tutor or from books. The outcome of the crit was the difficulty in representing foliage, so I showed my learners a example I had previously painted for a class on trees, which was a winter tree, but my L's needed to know how to do a tree in foliage, and so I took the dry brushstroke effect on the example below, ( twigs at the end of the branches ) and applied the same technique to representing full foliage in a quick dem. However I made it clear that there are as many ways of painting trees, as there are artists painting them, However, I wanted to demonstrate a more structured tree, and began by drawing and containing the proportions, and main arterial branches, I then pulled a not too wet brush towards me, and towards the end branches by laying the brush as horizontally as possible, and aim to lightly skim the surface of the paper with the whole width of the brush, and turning the paper so that the brushstrokes created a fan shape. Phil then helpfully suggested that we pass the demo round the class for us all to have a go, I thought this was a splendid idea, everyone groaned Nooooo! and so I passed it to phil to get the ball rolling. The painting below left is the work of the whole group, each having added their bit of dry brushstroke foliage. The group then went on to do their own whole dry brushstroke trees, and here is a gallery of their work This tree below is the learners tree with me adding the next stage, and that was to define the light falling on top of the clusters of foliage, by painting in the negative spaces behind them darker.
