Encaustic Wax Art

Encaustic Wax Art

Hello my name is Carol (or Cazzy or Caz) I work with encaustic waxes on canvas, mdf, watercolour paper as well as the usual encaustic art card. I have also used glass, wood and mirrors as a support for the wax. I have a studio space at a local craft centre where I hold workshops on a regular basis and also teach at various art and craft shops locally. I have enjoyed painting with wax since 1991 and teaching since 1996. My studio is also a mini gallery for all my work and where I also take commissions. I guess you can say I have a little business although I am not making much money but to have a space to work from has helped me focus on my artwork. I love it there, its my space and besides I live in an apartment with no room to paint on the larger scale that I now want to paint in. My work is colourful and vibrant. I was drawn to the medium because of the vibrant colours and the magic of heat and wax. The flowing wax, the ripples of texture, the smell of the beeswax, the translucent colours, the unexpected are all things that inspire me and work on my imagination. I have had no formal training in art but since childhood have had a strong interest in it. I was told by my art tutor at secondry school that I would have had no trouble getting into art college. Back in the late 60's things were different and I didn't follow that path which I now regret. I did think about it as I was thinking of becoming an art teacher but after talking to my career adiviser !!!!!!! I ended up working in a retail shop as a trainee window dresser. Back then I was happy as I was 16 and getting a wage. All be it in a small way I have fulfilled my ambition of being an art teacher as I now teach Encaustic Art in my little studio. My latest work is larger than most encaustic paintings (24 x 20) and is on triple primed canvas. It is very colourful. I am finding the shapes and colours are mirrors of things I have chosen for my home and have without thinking been drawn to. The wax is put onto the canvas thinly but I want to do more textured work which will need to be on a hard support . The flexibility of the box canvas could crack heavy layers of wax. I have just registered and this is my first blog and I am yet to upload paintings in my gallery so watch this space.
