Thank you Phil and all other respondees for all your useful comments, I think my painting will never see the light of day, but I like it anyway so it can hang on my wall like a persona non grata! Just one other small point perhaps, when at Art School I remember being advised that it was permissible to copy a Master provided you signed your name then put "after Jo Bloggs" or whomsover. Is this advice now redundant? Phil it was useful to get a response from a photographer. Actually though with the case in point I only have a cutting of the picture so I cannot trace the legitimate owner. It would have been nice to display it saying something like: " Honours to the photographer who's work inspsired this painting but is unknown", regrettably it will have to remain hidden.
