A pictorial alphabet of favourite places I've sketched and painted around England

pin mill 4

Pin Mill is a timeless riverside hamlet, on the River Orwell, well hidden from the modern world. Even the three nearest villages, Shotley, Holbrook and Wherstead, have never been heard of by most people! The Butt and Oyster pub, the buildings, the boatbuilders, and the Thames barges moored on the Hard have been there for generations, only the tourists are new, and their cars are generally out of sight in the well-hidden car park. With its compositionally perfectly located pub and a working boatyard, it has attracted artists for over a century, from Seago and Wesson, to today's best landscape watercolourists. Its tidal range can change from high water to all mud in a couple of hours. This means you can paint a low tide picture with Thames barges on the mud and, when you finish. start a new picture of the boats floating on a high tide. If you don't get wet feet first, of course!

Yes, Linda, the houseboats are still there, as quirky and mysterious as ever, and beyond them the hulks and skeletons of old barges on the river bank mud in Buttermans Bay. I have lots of photos of them in my to be painted file!

Thank you for sharing - I spent many an hour painting at Pin Mill around the 1990's. I remember seeing an original Giles cartoon in the Butt and Oyster pub (they did great beer and chips!). If they are still there, walk through the car park of the pub and you will see loads of house boats where people live (fantastic painting oportunities).
