A pictorial alphabet of favourite places around England – E for Essex

A pictorial alphabet of favourite places I've sketched and painted around England

Let’s face it, some letters will be more difficult to fulfil than others. I haven’t spent the last few years travelling with my sketchbook thinking “where can I go beginning with an E?” This alphabetical project was only conceived during the coronavirus lockdown. I like Essex, I lived there for 4 years while working in London in the 70’s, and I found the contrast of the old, quaint medieval villages with the wild, empty, coastal creek communities fascinating. But I hadn’t discovered art then. Later trips were bedevilled by bad weather, so my sketches of Maldon, Brightlingsea & St. Osyth aren’t worth sharing. The picture shown is a sketchbook page from a stay in inland, rural Essex, where a walk around the local farmland provided inspiration.

Thank you, Michael. I only lived there for 4 years but it felt remote from everywhere. It was a 2 hour drive to the M1 before I could start heading North to my Lancashire roots. But yes, there is still plenty to inspire the painter.
