The Dane Valley forms the county boundary where Cheshire meets Staffordshire and Derbyshire and holds many dramatic views, including Three Shire Heads. This is a packhorse bridge at the point where the three counties meet, wonderfully remote, and with a reputation for lawlessness in the olden days, when thieves and brigands were able to evade capture by simply stepping over the county boundary. Three Shire Heads is a mile from the nearest road and Panniers Pool, below the packhorse bridge, is the perfect place to rest, snack and sketch on an exhilarating walk through wild moorland.
