Chelmorton field patterns auto sml

Dry stone walls are regional features in many rural parts of England and when the field sizes are small, they make fascinating patterns in the landscape. Chelmorton is well-known in the Peak District for having an abundance of close-packed walls. Those in my painting aren’t the tightest or most dramatic patterns there, but the location was convenient. Just across the road, at Brierlow Bar, there’s a very big, very good, bookshop, with a superb cafe and a small art gallery round the back. I was delivering paintings to the gallery for a month’s guest artist exhibition, so I took my dog, walked into the fields, did this outdoor painting, had coffee and cake at the cafe, walked back and did another outdoor painting of a barn, then had a late lunch at the cafe. A perfect day.
