The bridge is located in the beautiful Lodi Garden,known earlier as Lady Wllingdon Park. It was built over a tributary of the river Yamuna. The tributary has long since dried up and the bridge now spans an ornamental lake. The word Athpula refers to the 8 pillars of the bridge. Around 1790 the British artist,William Daniell,made an engraving of a man,seated on an elephant,crossing the bridge.
