Queen of Night Tulip

Tulip ‘Queen of Night,' Watercolour on paper.

"Of all the tulips that appear regularly in my garden, 'Queen of Night' is definitely queen of the borders. With her deep, almost black petals, she appeals to my Gothic side. She likes to share her bed by the front porch with a 'Black Parrot' and a 'Ballerina' for a touch of complementary colour. Swaying together in the breeze or shining their waxy petals in the full sun, they look stunning under the wisteria." - Sandrine Maugy, Botanical Watercolour Flowers through the Seasons.

Harmonic Shadows

The Harmonic Shadow mix for a black flower needs to be strong and dark enough to show through the subsequent layers of dark paint. However, because the petals are glossy, it is better to use non-granulating pigments, as granulating pigments would give some unwanted texture. For my shadow mix, I used Perylene Violent + Phthalo Blue Red Shade + Hansa Yellow Light.

The dark colour that will be used for most of the tulip is a neutral, deep purple mix of Perylene Violet with Phthalo Blue.
