Bluebells in Hitch Wood, acrylic on acylic paper, (30.5x40.6cm)

Learn how to capture the essence of a bluebell wood in spring with Mike Rollins.

Simplifying the view

A bluebell wood is a fleeting moment in spring that begs to be captured in paint, but where would you begin?

On the surface it is such a simple view, with a few trees, a path, and a swathe of colour. Look closer and there is potential for lots of finicky detail, and many leaves, tiny flowers and textures in the undergrowth.

However, the important quality of the scene is not in the detail, but in the mood of the light. The freshness of the green in the canopy tells us that the leaves are newly opened, and the calm caste of the bluebells lifts the spirits like a sunny day, even though the sky is grey overhead.
