Stone Bridge, Penrose Burden, Cornwall - by Colin Steed, watercolour, 11x18in
Last summer I travelled from my home in Essex to the beautiful North Cornish coast, where the harbour of Padstow and the surrounding coastal villages made lovely subjects for me to paint. While touring the area I came across this old, granite stone bridge on a single-track road, near Penrose Burden. It spans the river Camel, a few miles inland from the coast. From the angle this photograph was taken, it had all the ingredients needed to make a perfect subject to paint, but if I wanted to produce a successful watercolour from the photo, I needed to simplify my approach.
Analyse and simplify
If we analyse most landscape subjects, we come across three main areas: distance, middle distance and foreground. In this photo, the river flows from the right-hand corner, under an old granite stone bridge in the foreground. The ivy-clad tree that stands on the riverbank holds the eye, while the bridge sends the eye to the opposite side where another, less prominent tree leads us to trees that stand on the bank behind the bridge in the middle distance. That then sends the eye to the small distant area between the foreground and middle-distant trees. The small tree in the immediate, right-hand foreground added nothing to the composition and was left out.
