Symmetry Interrupted
Derwent Coloursoft on Black Stonehenge
This piece invites viewers into a façade of architectural symmetry—terraced townhouses aligned with historical grace, rendered with the meticulous precision afforded by colour pencil. Yet this equilibrium is abruptly and unapologetically fractured by an eruption of graffiti, urban texture, and defiance. “Symmetry Interrupted” reflects a tension between order and disruption, permanence and impermanence. The symmetrical structures represent institutional memory and middle-class aspirations, while the sprayed symbols voice immediacy, rebellion, and the need to be seen. It’s a visual pause—a moment where conformity stutters and individual expression demands space. By disturbing the composition’s equilibrium, the graffiti redirects the eye and challenges the viewer: What does beauty look like when it's unsanctioned? Can rebellion share a wall with tradition? The juxtaposition of these elements through delicate pencil strokes aims to elevate everyday tensions to a gallery-worthy dialogue. Technically, the piece plays with golden ratio overlays and rule of thirds misalignment, making the interruption not just thematic but structural—capturing the moment symmetry fails and storytelling begins. Framed 44cm x 44cm. Derwent Coloursoft on Black Stonehenge.
