Narrowdale, Tim Fisher
System 3 acrylics are a pleasure to paint with using a brush, a palette knife or a combination of both. They can be applied to a variety of grounds without the need for any special surface preparation. Having worked with these paints for a number of years, I find that the Loxley range of canvas-covered boards give me one of the best surface on which to work.
System 3 Acrylic Colours
Contained within the range is a comprehensive selection of colours that give excellent lightfastness, permanence, durability and covering power. If you’re just beginning with acrylics, a good starter palette would be: Mars black, titanium white, cadmium red (hue), cadmium yellow (hue), process cyan, deep violet, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, and oxide of chromium green. I don’t normally have a ready-made green in my palette, but I find that oxide of chromium green offers up some very natural green mixes. With experience you may want to add more colours, but this selection as a starter will solve most colour-mixing issues.
Palette Knife Techniques
Narrowdale was painted entirely with the palette knife. The subject was initially drawn with a black Sharpie pen. I really like the textured impasto effects that can be achieved using acrylics. System 3 lends itself well to this technique, leaving the sculpted marks visible to be seen and appreciated.
The poppies were the final things to be added at the end of the painting, using the tip of the knife with cadmium red hue and a little cadmium yellow hue then finished with a little dot of Mars black at the end.
Lane to Crowdecote is another palette-knife painting. Creating foliage with a knife is a satisfying, almost abstract process, which really helps to loosen up your style. This subject is predominantly green and was greatly helped by using chromium green, lightened with cadmium yellow hue, and for the darker passages, adding a little Mars black to the mix. The distant trees were created by mixing warm grey with chromium green.
System 3 Original is a first-rate acrylic paint that offers the user a satisfying painting experience at an economical price. Its unique fl ow formula makes it ideal for large scale paintings or smaller studio projects. For anyone considering starting with acrylics, this paint would be a good choice to use.
