In the summer issues Leisure Painter and The Artist we invited readers to enter the fifth of six summer sketchbook challenges set by David Bellamy in Leisure Painter and Adebanji Alade in The Artist.

Summer's challenge in Leisure Painter was to sketch waterways with the following advice from David:

'In the heat of summer it is hard to find anywhere better than sitting beside a river sketching under the shade of trees, so this month seek out a river, canal or stream and carry out a number of sketches of various pools, runs, cascades or bends in the river. Maybe include a bridge, some trees and the effects of light and shade. Try a different medium for each sketch if you wish and make copious notes on the side of the sketch, maybe about your feelings and response as you sketch, notes on colours when you are using monochrome, or any incidents. Many towns and cities are blessed with canals and rivers that make excellent subjects and don’t involve a great deal of travel.

'For the housebound any sketches, paintings or photographs from your past of days out by the river may inspire you to try a new sketch or series of sketches, on which you can note your memories and responses. Imagination, of course can be very effective in helping you create a scene, perhaps partly based of visual memories. It may be helpful to get friends and family to talk about their experiences down by the river, especially on their visual reaction'.

For The Artist, Adebanji invited readers to sketch commuters saying: 'This month is all about sketching commuters or people travelling. Whether you are on the bus, train, coach, underground, plane or at any travel station, get your sketchbook and sketching materials out and sketch the people around you! Sketch them in all sorts of moods and modes'

From all of the entries (which you can see by clicking here) the judges selected Girl on the Train (see below) by Fred Elwell as the winning entry.

Of Fred's winning sketch (see below) Adebanji said: 'I have chosen this lovely sketch as the winner for this month because it captures the essence of a commuter on the train. I have always said that sleepers are the best people to sketch on public transport, if you are just starting out, and Fred has really caught this sleeper in two very natural positions. I love the fact that he has positioned both in the same frame and they really work quite well. You can almost hear her breathing sweetly as she slips into each ‘sleepmode’.'

Fred wins a £50 gift voucher from Great Art.
