Winners of The Artist and Leisure Painter May Sketchbook Competitions Announced
Winners of our May summer sketching competitions announced.

In the May issues Leisure Painter and The Artist we invited readers to enter our second of six summer sketchbook challenges set by David Bellamy in Leisure Painter and Adebanji Alade in The Artist.
May's challenge in Leisure Painter was to sketch nature with the following advice from David: 'Getting out into nature, one of my favourite pursuits, is the sketchbook task this month. Whether you like animals, birds, plants, trees, wandering in fields or woodlands there is much to occupy you, and if you prefer not to wander too far then perhaps visit a friendly farm, picnic site or even the local zoo. Farmers, when approached are usually extremely helpful so long as you don’t obstruct their work. Plan your approach in advance and the sort of subjects you have in mind.
Animals and birds make for difficult subjects when they are moving – attempt the less active at first and don’t try to continually correct on the spot, simply move on to another drawing, otherwise you will lose the freshness and spontaneity. Jot down notes on your experiences, such as the light, weather, colours and interesting incidents, and especially the interaction between individual animals and birds and perhaps their response to yourself.
If you are unable to get out or are confined indoors try to find a friend or member of the family who may be able to take photographs for you of local views that you have enjoyed in the past, and if possible bring back tales of encounters and chats with people. This is a lovely time of year for being in the countryside, and maybe you can persuade someone to take you out.
A pair of binoculars can be useful for distant features, especially if you are not able to move closer. Take a picnic, a flask and immerse yourself in the beauty of the countryside'.
If you are logged into PaintersOnline you can see all of the entries to this competition by clicking here. Of these entries David selected Orphan Squirrels by Joan Scott (see below) as the winning entry.
Joan wins a Caran d’Ache sketching pack worth £50(rrp), comprising 12 water-soluble coloured pencils and a book to illustrate and four graphite pencils with sharpener from Jakar International Ltd.
For The Artist, Adebanji invited readers to sketch statues and monuments with the following advice: 'This month we will be going on the hunt for statues and monuments - every town and city has them. I especially love statues of people. It’s a good way to improve your drawing of people and figures because they don’t move. It’s easy to make a really solid sketch and learn structure and proportion. I’m looking forward to seeing some great sketches of statues and monuments from around where you live or your travels. So get out there and let’s see what you come up with. I’d love to see these rendered in any medium with which you are comfortable,'
From all of the entries (which you can see by clicking here) the judges selected The Cenotaph ( see below) by Robbie Murdoch as the winning entry, with Adebanji also highly recommending Sir Walter Scott Monument and Edinburgh Castle by Alan Bickley, Hellenistic Greek, Ashmolean Museum by Janet Scott, The Queen's Horse, Estimate by Linda Drury and Bust Study by Martin Hill.
Of Robbie's winning sketch (see below) Adebanji said: 'I have awarded Robbie the first prize here because he has captured this monument in such a lovely way. It has presence! I love the way he has positioned the statue on the page, the lovely effect of light and shade. The background building, trees and figures give us a real sense of scale and the monument feels so gloriously lit and works superbly well. It’s a splendid piece and though he added a few details here and there, it still retains a fresh sketchy appeal'.
Robbie wins a £50 gift voucher from Great Art.
Our congraulations go to both winning artists.
