Oil paintings by Rebecca Barnard feature in a new exhibition at Cambridge Contemporary Art in Trinity Street, Cambridge. Twelve of her latest works are on show from June 5, when there is a private view between 6pm and 7.30pm, until June 28. “Cambridge Contemporary Art is one of my main galleries; I have been with them for a decade,” explains Rebecca, who was born and brought up in Cambridge. “I have had two solo shows at this gallery previously and am always delighted to have an exhibition here. They are a long established gallery on one of the main streets in Cambridge, just off King's Parade. Cambridge is a lovely city, too.” Contemporary British visual artist, Rebecca Barnard, was born in 1961 near Saffron Walden. From 1982, after her foundation course, she took the opportunity to go abroad for five years, living and working in both Europe and Australia. On her return, she studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art. She has, for many years, been exhibiting widely and her work is now in private collections throughout the UK and abroad. The process of creating an image is as important to Rebecca, as the emotion evoked by the outcome, and the progression and direction of each project will depend on mood, light and energy. Each piece has it's own palette and story, and requires something particular from her. “Light and atmosphere are central to my practice. To see light playing on a surface or a view, or to feel the texture and structure of a weathered object, is like hearing a siren call to recreate it using my hands, paint, the materials around me. To me, these things are thrilling and when combined with atmosphere, shape and the instinct to create; the whole is irresistible.” Rebecca lives and works in London and Somerset.
