Ray Campbell Smith was a long-term editorial consultant for Leisure Painter.

He was born on 25th January 1916 in Lewisham, London, and brought up in Bromley, Kent. His interest in painting began at an early age and he continued to draw and paint throughout the war and until shortly before his death.

Ray will be remembered by the many students who attended his St Julian’s Club courses and by those who attended the forty-plus exhibitions of his paintings. As well as contributing regularly to leading art magazines he gave lectures, demonstrations and criticisms to numerous art groups. He wrote and illustrated 17 books on art and painting including “Fresh Watercolour” and “Watercolour Workout”, both of which became major best-sellers. All his books became popular worldwide and they have been translated into ten languages including Russian and Chinese. Ray also wrote and presented a similar number of instructional DVD’s which were equally popular.

He served throughout World War II and, as an artillery captain, was twice mentioned in Despatches for bravery in the face of the enemy.

Ray died on 18th January 2016, one week short of his 100th birthday, and was preceded in death by his beloved wife Eileen, and their daughter Wendy. He is survived by his son Paul and his family, Wendy’s family, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
