Charcoal - that AMAZING artists' media! There's so much you can do with it and in this webinar I will show you how. Today’s artists don’t just have sticks. There are blocks, grades (from ‘H’ to ‘very soft’), liquid charcoal, powders and more!

This webinar takes you through the possibilities of adding new dimensions to working with a traditional media, in contemporary, new and exciting ways. To include liquid, powder and charcoal aquarelle all in the same expressive drawing creates amazing depth!

The reference photograph of one of the quieter Yorkshire Dales villages, ‘Thorpe’ in Upper Wharfedale (Near Grassington), provides you with lots of opportunities to explore texture and light, the main themes of this workshop, using different types of charcoal in combination.

Drawing media has never been as exciting and in this webinar you’ll learn how to move graphite into the painting realm. We will explore ways of painting with graphite - creating multiple layers of monotone, duo tone and combinations of subtle tints of glowing earth tones - transparent blue and subtle smoky greys.

This will be an exciting practical webinar, exploring drawn and painted graphite marks together with lots of successful outcomes on different textured papers. It will also be an eye opener to the new and innovative liquid graphite ‘paints’, which when combined with expressive drawn marks, create really exciting drawings indeed!

The photographic scene for you to use in this webinar is local to me in North Yorkshire. Layers of liquid graphite will be wonderful to use to express the scene. Have your materials at the ready, this is going to be another good one!

Ink with charcoal and graphite can be a really exciting combination to express your ideas. They add so much to your drawings, and in this webinar I will explain how successful colour combinations, with a limited colour palette, can further your continued expressive drawing experiences.

About Robert Dutton ASGFA

Robert Dutton

Robert is a professional artist and lives in North Yorkshire; a move he made with confidence from Leeds in March ‘21, to be closer to his ever popular painting and expressive drawing subject matter - the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales, East Yorkshire Coast, and The Lake District.

Having qualified with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (with Honours), Robert worked as a professional Graphic Designer and illustrator for over 30 years in the commercial sector to include in-house positions with financial clients KPMG and PwC.

Following successive shows in London with his work and sell out shows in the North of England, in 2013 Robert took the decision to become a full time artist when his expressive style of painting became popular and in demand.

Since then, his unique style has grown with increasing respect and he has won numerous and continual awards in leading national galleries and open art competitions. His work has been exhibited at ‘The Mall Galleries’ in London with the prestigious ‘Pastel Society’ and the Society of Graphic Fine Art, with whom he is an Associate Artist.

Robert also teaches popular and regular sell out residential art holidays in the Lake District at independent adult education colleges and with HF Holidays and more recently with The National Trust. He is a regular demonstrator nationally for art groups, a popular online art tutor and a regular contributor to The Artist’ magazine, as well as running his own workshops in North Yorkshire.

Prestigious brands such as Derwent, Nitram Charcoal (Canada) and Unison Colour pastels (Northumberland) have recognised and valued Robert's contributions to their brands with the quality of the work he continues to create in new and exciting ways with their different media. As a result, Robert has become an ambassador for each, creating innovative paintings and drawings that not only contribute to their popular products featured on their websites and packaging, but as award-winning works also.

In March 2021, ‘Search Press’ published Robert’s latest book ‘Drawing Dramatic Landscapes’ (the first in their ‘Innovative Artist Series’) and this first edition has received much public acclaim and is a top-selling book. The 166 page exciting publication highlights Roberts’ unique style expressive style and connection to his dramatic landscape subjects. A must-have for any art enthusiast and collector!
