This is a brilliant sea dragon and thanks for the information about the acrylic varnish.

Wow, more learning to be had and a lovely painting too

Nicely done David.

Interesting technique and interesting painting David.

Brilliant piece David. Really love the background.

Beautiful animal and lovely painting.

Thankyou everyone. This is another family competition piece on the theme of endangered species and they have come up with great research about both the Sea Dragons and Giant Kelp.

This is an experiment painted with cheap gouache but using acrylic varnish ,diluted 50/50 with water, as the medium. It essentially makes the layers waterproof and the colours more intense . The Sea Dragon or Weedy Sea Dragon only occurs in southern Australian shallow coastal waters. It has very peculiar genetics . Very difficult to keep healthy in Aquaria but one Tasmanian commercial enterprise is breeding them successfully. A live one in USA can cost $10,000 !
