I met an owl with no sense of direction some years ago - out for a walk in the dusk, and the bird flew within fractions of an inch of my face: and this is much what he looked like (except he was a Tawny Owl): surprised, and not a little put out.<br /><br />I do like your branches in this one - those blackish twigs look just like hawthorn. This would be a good painting even without the bird!

Thank you Carole, Jenny, Val and Robert for your kind comments. Robert, I'm afraid I can't take total credit for the background. I used a piece of Japanese Lokti paper from my collage paper stash. It comes embossed with the tree branch image but takes watercolour really well so I added the washes to define the evening sky.
