Hi Tom. Like your drawing and think your instructor was right. I seem to remember that in the old days the first year at art school was spent drawing. In a similar vein it reminds me of a photography course where the students were given simple cameras in the first year and told to 'look' and make photos. Later they were introduced to complex cameras. Learn to walk before you run etc.
