Gannets Greeting by Steven Croft
Northern Gannets pair for several breeding seasons, sometimes for life. They part when their offspring leave the nest but pair up again with their mate the following breeding season. Mated pairs engage in a 'fencing' displays with their bills as a sign of greeting when the male returns to the nest. This painting was based on life observation of gannets breeding at the RSPB Reserve at Bempton Cliffs which is the home to about 12000 breeding pairs.
