Beautiful painting and wonderful foreground, Tessa.

I like your mark making in the foreground, Tessa.

A simple scene, boldly presented. Great texture too. Lovely.

A favourite poem of mine Tessa, super work so well captured.

Lovely foreground with those sweeping grasses. Like the colours in the distance and middle ground. I think the brick like object to the right, stops the eye from enjoying the whole. Hope you don't mind me saying so Tessa.

Thanks so much Cesare, Ellen, Willie, Alan and Carole for your kind comments. Carole - the object is a haystack and by coincidence when I passed this morning it has now gone! Alas not in my painting which was started about a week ago! I certainly don’t mind your comment, all welcome, good or not so, and it’s always interesting to hear what other artists think re composition and style etc.

Love this Tessa, the headge row super, perfect colours for late summer.

Good foreground and I like your sky Tessa. Sad to see end of Summer.

A lovely snapshot of the scene interesting and I love it's portrait...

Love the poem AND your painting, Tessa. The scene is beautifully typical of late summer, with the hay stacked and ready for storage. Lovely. Bri

Many thanks Fiona, , Carole, Gudrun and Alan for your lovely comments. Everyone seems to like The foreground more than the distance, which I’ll bear in mind for the future! Gudrun- it’s John Keats “To Autumn “. Can’t say I’m that familiar with the actual poem so I’m going to look it up again! It was just the title that this brought to mind as I started it on 1st September when the countryside round here suddenly seemed to look really autumnal. I do like poetry and I think it suggests some good ideas for paintings.

Love the sweeping grass painted with the palette knife, like your style and choice of colours, Tessa.

Thanks a lot Brian and Annick, much appreciated!

The distance is fine, excellent in fact Tessa, so don't do anything different. The stacked bales are needed and balance the whole composition. It's donkey's years since I read that poem, either O or A level English Lit, always remembered it.

Thank you Russell and Alan. Russell, I just looked through your gallery and your portraits are wonderful, very accomplished. Alan, glad you remember the poem! I live not far from Adlestrop if you remember that one? The station unfortunately has long gone, but the sign has been retained at the entrance to this lovely village and it’s filed somewhere in the back of my mind for a painting sometime, maybe a wet winters day in the next few months! Thanks all who’ve looked and commented.

How beautiful this looks Tessa. Lovely work.

Brilliant brushwork Tessa.

Super painting , great composition Tessa

Thanks a lot Michael, Margaret and Dermot for all your kind comments.

My favourite poem and superb painting, Tessa, especially like the scrubby foreground and sense of distance in this!

Thank you Thalia. It took a lot of layers to complete the foreground and I still feel it could take more!

I pass this field walking the dog and thought I should capture the last of summer and arrival of autumn. It’s oil on board 20 x 16” which is a bit bigger than I usually do but it seemed to suit the scene. I’ve used quite a lot of palette knife especially for the scrubby foreground.

About the Artist
Tessa Gwynne

I have returned to painting over the last few years having relocated from Cardiff to the Cotswolds in 2009 and joined the Guiting Power Art Group. Although I did a year's Foundation Course at art college after leaving school, I hadn’t painted much in the interim, except for a few attempts here and…
