Fantastic, Tessa. Beautiful palette knife work and fabulous scene. Love it.

Cor.....some lovely textures in this Tessa. Bold and descriptive......like it a lot.

Lovely textures and marks Tessa.

Gorgeous texture, Tessa. I totally agree about the water based oils. I started with them many years ago after using acrylics. I changed to 'proper' oils 4 years ago and wouldn't want to change back! Your use of the knife in this piece is, I think quite superb. So much to look at! Love it

Many thanks Seth,Fiona,Michael and Thalia for your lovely comments. Thalia, interesting to hear your view on “real oils”. I have never been totally convinced about the WS version and it seems a bit mad to have two separate selections, but maybe useful for indoor v outdoor painting. Would be interested to hear anyone else’s views on the two.

This is super Tessa, those rocks are really effective, smashing work!

Great textures and colours Tessa.

Tessa, for the record, I have tried 3 brands of water based oils, I find them sticky, I've not found a way of using mediums with them that work, but maybe I didn't use enough. it's difficult to obtain materials quickly here so I'm terribly mean with everything. I now let my workshop students use them as they're far less messy in my lounge!!! They seem to have more success with them, as I encourage them to be themselves and use loads of paint!!! Lol!

Thanks so much Margaret and Sandra, and Thalia for your further views. I too found the WS sticky for quite a time but persevered because I go to a group where only these are acceptable. In time I’ve realised that prepping my painting surface with three coats of gesso does the trick as the paint then doesn’t get absorbed so quickly. However I have mountains of the real stuff left so ....may well have a bit of both on the go! Happy painting. X

I like this Tessa, especially the rocks. Very effective.

Thank you Dorothy- was just looking at your lovely drawings!

So much energy in this, captures the seascape beautifully. A hard ask, well executed!

Painted at and following a palette knife session with Cotswold artist Rupert Aker. I have used water soluble oils for about two years now but really enjoyed reverting to what I still consider “proper oils” for this! I appreciate the health concerns but the real stuff is so good to use. Thanks to Rupert for the day -which was really enjoyable. I used to use palette knife more but felt my drawing was suffering so changed to more brushwork though still add palette knife work when it feels appropriate.

About the Artist
Tessa Gwynne

I have returned to painting over the last few years having relocated from Cardiff to the Cotswolds in 2009 and joined the Guiting Power Art Group. Although I did a year's Foundation Course at art college after leaving school, I hadn’t painted much in the interim, except for a few attempts here and…
