I love these small paintings Steve - the onions are superbly observed and painted, brilliant use of colour. As you are collecting a lot of onions at the moment, do you frame these or simply just leave the canvas unframed?

On the whole, I'm indifferent to still life - always felt it was a stage you had to go through, to learn about tone and form, but I couldn't wait to leave it behind and get on with some "real" painting. However - and maybe it's partly because I just love onions, who knows - I really like this one, and your red onion you posted earlier. Charles Dickens wrote somewhere - A Christmas Carol? - about "fat" onions, juicy and round... and that's exactly what your paintings call to my mind. If this is your "Onion Stage" - does that sound less impressive than Picasso's "Blue Period"? Why should it? - then so much the better. Just don't forget to chop 'em up when painted, and have them with a Spanish omelette, or a dahl, or with liver and tomatoes .... slurp.

This really good. And clever title too. Great gallery.

Steve, I'm loving your 'onion stage'.......I think it's the depth of colour you achieve on the skin.

Luv your small simple still-lifes! Great tonal extension and very disciplined. Bravo!

Cheers Pat, I paint them on canvas, stick them to board and mount them to fit a standard frame; this saves on the cost. I generally frame them for exhibition but people tend to want to frame their own. All the best, Steve.

Thanks Robert, Glad you like them. The good thing about still life is that you get to eat the props. All the best, Steve

Cheers, Tony, Fiona and Judith, Thanks for looking in. All th best, Steve.

Love this picture,i had a simular phase a few years ago, only mine was pears. It works so well because its simple in both its subject/composition and hues/colour....it really is a great little painting, well done.

Thanks Matthew, I think pears could well feature in the future...I keep a look out in the fruit aisle whenever I'm at the supermarket.

Stunning still life Steve, love the composition and palette colour

Cheers Petra. All the best, Steve.

Superb onions Steve, they have wonderful freshness about them.

Thanks Barbara, All the best, Steve.

Absolutely super, Steve. Somehow, I managed to miss quite a few of your paintings in this gallery. They're all lovely.

Thanks Seok, (am I getting your first name the right way around?) glad you like them. All the best, Steve.

Love those touches of bright green and the warmth in some of the highlights. A super still life.

Like Seok, I must have missed most of your work but here it is, I like your work a lot and will have a proper look at your gallery in a minute.

Thanks Lesley and Satu. All the best, Steve.

14cm x 9cm oil on canvas. I think this this must be my onion stage.
