House of Pioneers by Seok Yam Chew
A Peranakan house on Emerald Hill Road, Singapore. Once, Singapore was replete with these old houses which were built by the Peranakan Chinese, or Straits-born Chinese, who were the descendants of 17th Century Chinese immigrants who intermarried with Indonesians or Malays. These quaint houses, usually painted in candy colors, had distinctive ornate carved signages, lamps and tiles. With the modernisation of Singapore, many of these houses have been demolished to make way for our skyscrapers. The houses on Emerald Hill Road (which was incidentally named by the Irish during the colonial era for their homeland) have been preserved and designated collectively as a heritage site.
