Super watercolour Seok of such an interesting subject. Like the colours, especially that turquoise on the porch which from your description will be true to life. I wouldn't have imagined an 'Emerald Hill road ' to be in Singapore, fortunately preserved for you to paint and us to admire!

Fantastic watercolour Seok, beautiful building, love the composition and colours

Beautiful , vivid and clear watercolour Seok! I also like reading the information too! It brings it to life for the viewer.

A lovely, beautifully painted watercolour Seok with, as always, a fascinating story to tell.

One of the first things that struck me when landing in Singapore in 1955 was the colour of the houses. I remember writing home to my parents and telling them about the amazing colours. And Seok, you have caught that perfectly. Well done.

What a beautiful house and such a shame that so many have been demolished to make room for "concrete towers" !!!!! The colours are gorgeous and the details so well depicted. It's traditional architecture that makes a country worth visiting so thanks for documenting this one.

Lovely Seok. Nice to see an "urbanscape" - nice, light feel. I remember seeing this type of house when I visited about 20 years ago. Delightful city

Yes, lovely, vivid colours which I rightly or wrongly associate with Singapore.

Super work and as usual such an interesting story to go with it, so pleased these colourful and evocative houses have been saved!

Beautiful fresh watercolour Seok, lots of detail and yet such a light touch. Lovely greens !

Exquisite work Seok. The figure gives a wonderful sense of proportion and each detail is lovingly rendered. The red lanterns (bells?) ignite the complementary greens perfectly. Could be a piece of porcelain.

Thank you, everyone, for your very kind comments!

I absolutely love this beautiful painting of yours Seok! Such an interesting story behind it and all. The details and the colours are exquisite and you must be so proud of it. I wish I could paint like you!!

Everybody has said it already Seok, a superb painting to accompany the story you have told. You manage to bring everything to life for us so well.

Thanks very much, Satu and Val!

Charming and very atmospheric of the place. I love these informative paintings of yours and your super detailed explanations, which make us all feel that we have traveled around the world with you.

Thanks very much, Thea!

A Peranakan house on Emerald Hill Road, Singapore. Once, Singapore was replete with these old houses which were built by the Peranakan Chinese, or Straits-born Chinese, who were the descendants of 17th Century Chinese immigrants who intermarried with Indonesians or Malays. These quaint houses, usually painted in candy colors, had distinctive ornate carved signages, lamps and tiles. With the modernisation of Singapore, many of these houses have been demolished to make way for our skyscrapers. The houses on Emerald Hill Road (which was incidentally named by the Irish during the colonial era for their homeland) have been preserved and designated collectively as a heritage site.
