Endurance
Another advantage of painting in the giant greenhouses at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore was that when the horrible haze was choking us in June this year, the greenhouses with their filtered air were a safe haven. This was painted en plein air during a particularly horrendous week in June when the smoke was billowing across from Indonesia. A pre-Fabio Cembranelli workshop painting - the background was a bit of wishy washy. I called this painting "Endurance" because the orchid, according to Confucius, endures the hardships of hunger and thirst, and is only loosely tied to the things that support it, growing where others cannot. Obviously the haze was getting to me, or I would not be quoting Confucius! With bad food and bad air, I am NOT a fan of anything that comes out of Indonesia or China at this point in time!
