I like this - and I would be interested in trying this technique. I hope these are not stupid questions:- Did you use fixative after adding your pastel pencil highlights? Would you varnish the finished painting?

Thanks for your comment Bobbie - I am glad you like it. Your questions are not stupid at all - I sometimes just try things for the heck of it without thinking about useful things like preserving the painting! I have not actually varnished it at all - if I were to display it I would put it under glass with a mount. The pastel pencils I used were quite hard so not as crumbly as a soft pastel might be so I could probably get away with an acrylic varnish which I use for a straight acrylic painting. I think you have to be careful with colour alterations when you varnish though - there is a bit about it online if you google 'fixing acrylic and pastel paintings'. I store all my paintings with dry media under glassine paper which protects them really well. I have had a few fixative disasters over the years! I really hope that's helped - I am sorry if I haven't answered well enough. Hopefully someone with more knowledge may spot this and add some tips! Best wishes to you, Sarah.

Sarah I really like the way you have painted this. I especially like how you have described the blackthorn blossom and the far tree line. A very accomplished piece.

Thank you so much Fiona - very happy that you like it!

Love the colours and the softness Sarah.

Thank you very much Diane!

I painted this a couple of years ago when the blackthorn blossom was out in March. The church is Breedon on the Hill, Leicestershire - an amazing place on the site of a hillfort and a Saxon monastery. There are still Saxon carvings you can see inside the church so it's well worth a visit. Am planning to paint it more in the future. It's an acrylic with some pastel pencil additions.
